What happened to Kabal in Mortal Kombat?

Kabal was first introduced in MK3 as a mysterious chosen warrior who survived an attack from one of Shao Kahn's extermination squads. We learn later that he was actually a member of the Black Dragon. He starts out seeming good, but then turns evil, determined to rule the Black Dragons. In a later game, he turns back to good, but his past in the Black Dragon is mentioned. Before his disfigurement by Kintaro's flames, he was a police officer, and his partner was Kurtis Stryker.
