It's about escapism and entertainment.

Second Life (SL) is a virtual world where the objects and avatars (players) are created by users. The world itself where these players and objects interact is created by Linden Labs. SL is not a game in the truest sense, as there are no goals to achieve. In SL, you simply "act" however you want to, pretend to be whatever you want to be, and create whatever your imagination can come up with. From Ants to Zorba The Great, your imagination is the only limit.

SL is free to play unless you wish to rent or purchase land in order to establish a home or base for your avatar/objects.
