First: A game engine is a programming framework that allows multiple games to be built from different libraries of images, characters, environments and sounds so that a group of game designers can pay more attention to the game elements and less to the basic programming of the game. Doom was a game that had it's basic gameplay code created as a game engine and other games were able to be made from the work of Id's programmers. Second: A game engine programmer is responsible for the code that determines the physics, the basic gameplay, and what kind of assets are able to be used in generation of a game.

They create a series of commands in sequence for a computer to process input with the intent of creating a program that is a game.They program in different languages and for different operating systems. Some work on the overall design, some on the artwork, some on the gameplay, others on the intelligence behind the game and some on the networking.

Basically, they make the game work and play well and actually be FUN! If it wasn't for programmers, you might have some really nice artwork and some cool movies to watch, but that's about it!
