Pontormo was associated with the Mannerist movement, which emerged in Italy in the late Renaissance period. Mannerist artists like Pontormo were known for their sophisticated, stylized approach to painting that emphasized expressive compositions and elongated figures.
During the Renaissance, painting techniques evolved to focus on realism, perspective, and the use of light and shadow to create depth. Themes shifted from religious subjects to include humanism, mythology, and nature. This marked a departure from the more symbolic and stylized approach of the previous period of art.

I think it is just a stylized 'A'..nothing more. It is featured in the text on the cover of the album Selected Amient Works ll. (although stylized a little further).
Impressionism was origionally a reaction to highly structured painting methods. Looking at the paintings of Van Dyke, Rembrandt, and others, we see that the painting methods were highly stylized and followed a formula. The subject matter was always formulaic and very mathematical. Impressionism depends on a less structured painting style. It's brushwork is more hurried and less blended. The vibrancy of the work is dependent on capturing the moment of the subject rather than a structured still life or portrait pose.
