It was designated for enlisted soldiers who had demonstrated a certain level of proficiency and experience in their military occupation, typically above the rank of Private First Class (E-3) but below that of a sergeant (E-5). The rank was often denoted by a single chevron with an eagle, and it was phased out during the 1980s as the Army streamlined its rank structure. Today, the equivalent rank would be Specialist (E-4).
