Reach is a planet that you noble 6 and your squad lands on protecting it as the Covenant try to destroy it or something.

Because the game takes place on a planet called Reach.

It is the Fall of Reach the planet is being invaded by the covenant and being the last line of defense before earth the Spartans fight to defend the endangered planet. They fail and most of the Spartans die. 2 or 3 survived but it was not said in the game. Master Chief or John something, a female spartan whos name i can not recall and another male who i also cannot remember the name of. Before halo 1 the other 2 Spartans died in battle with the covenant and only Master chief remained.
