If you are mining on a non-member world the chances of you finding a member gem are REALLY small... it is not possible to have a member item in your inventory unless you used to be a member or you are a member!!!
Often you can obtain magic gems (sapphire, emerald, ruby or diamond) at random when mining; a gem will appear in your inventory and the ore you are mining will still be in the rock. No xp is obtained from this.
yes , some times you do while mining , just like random events really You can randomly get several gems while mining; sapphires, rubies, emeralds, or diamonds. Others, too, if you are a member. Don't let anybody cut them for you - "free gem cutting" is a scam: uncut gems are worth more.

Gems can be obtained from Gem Rocks, and through mining all regular rocks that contain regular resources (iron, coal, tin, copper, silver, gold, rune, etc). To gain access to the Gem Rocks, you must have completed the "Shilo Village" quest to access Shilo Village, where the gem rocks can be found and mined. While the gems on these rocks are purple, you cannot obtain Dragonstone gems from them. It is also possible to access Gem Rocks without completing the Shilo Village quest by accessing the Al Kharid mine resource dungeon. However, this does require 75 Dungeoneering to enter.
RuneScape gems are most commonly "found" on the Grand Exchange in Varrock in RuneScape. At the Grand Exchange, all the tradeable gems can be exchanged at market price easily and quickly. Gems can also be obtained through monster drops, completing quests, and while training the mining skill. Pay to play players can also mine Gem Rocks which will yield 1 gem per rock when mined, but the rocks are usually very full and only players with high mining levels will actually be able to obtain any gems at all.
It is not possible to obtain onyx gems easily; they can be bought in the TzHaar city from the gem and ore store, obtained as a reward from the Fight Kiln minigame, rewarded from a challenge mystery bag, looted from a Kingly impling (rare), or mining with a gem-finding scrimshaw.
Well, there is no purple gem. Only black, white, red, green, and blue. But, if you think the black gem is purple, then it would be a legendary item. Hope that helped! Oh and by the way, the rankings for the gems are: *Blue Sapphire: Rare (lowest) *Non member and member *Red Ruby: Very Rare (2nd lowest) *Member *Green Emerald: Ultra Rare (3rd lowest) *Member *White Diamond: Legendary (2nd best) *Member *Black Diamond: Mythical (Best) *Member
