When it comes down to close range combat, the submachine gun, automatic pistol or shotgun, are all fine weapons. Both military and police operators have been using these weapons for decades with great success. This is almost an impossible question to answer. Efficiency presumably means the ability of the weapon to make someone incapable of fighting in the shortest possible time. This is based on the nature of close combat, where an opponent must ideally be incapacitated instantly for fear that they will have time and opportunity to hit back. Taking this definition there is no easy answer. So much depends on the nature of the opponent, and the overall intention of the assault. The opponent may be on drugs, unawares, wearing body armour, or very weak/strong. The intention may be to incapacitate silently, en masse, permanently or impermanently. You also have the question of your own circumstance. You may not have access to lots of ammunition, money, or weight carrying.

In the end, one weapon that will apply in almost any case is the simple sharpened shovel. If speed is the one criteria a high powered taser is likely to be better than any firearm, because it directly stops movement, rather than relying on blood loss and nerve damage.
