The term 'Mech, as in "Mechwarrior", originates from the game Battletech. 'Mech originally stood for "BattleMech", but later developments in the universe have led to the prefix of 'Mech becoming somewhat flexible: OmniMechs, IndustrialMechs, and ProtoMechs now exist in the universe as well. So a Mechwarrior is the pilot of a BattleMech or OmniMech. I have not seen the term used as the pilot for ProtoMechs or IndustrialMechs, as they are not piloted in the same way (ProtoMechs) or do not take part in combat (IndustrialMechs). 'Mechs are walking vehicles, generally fusion-powered and used similar to modern-day battle tanks, that range from 8-17 meters tall and 10-100 tons in mass, depending on the source material you read and the specific model of 'Mech. With very rare exceptions, 'Mechs have only one MechWarrior.
