The realm list is the master list of every server that you can access and create a character on. If you open it and click on a server, you will connect and it will show you any characters you may have on that particular server, or a blank screen with a new character option. The actual realm list also allows you to sort the servers by type, population, characters created on that server (10 per server), and name.
