'The Cricket Boy' is a story about a magistrate in Huayin who attempts to find a cricket who can fight in cricket fighting competitions for the king. In his search for a formidable cricket, the magistrate bankrupts most of the local village (due to inflation), including the family of Cheng Ming. At first, Cheng Ming buys his crickets, but eventually he finds a great one for the fighting competition. Unfortunately, his young son accidentally kills the cricket, and out of grief, attempts suicide. While the son lays in a comatose state, Cheng Ming discovers a small, but excellent fighting cricket. This cricket wins all of his fights, including one with a rooster, and becomes the king's favorite. The king makes the magistrate rich and powerful and the magistrate makes Cheng Ming wealthy as well. A year after his suicide attempt, the boy wakes up and tells his parents about his dreams as a fighting cricket.
