Well, the old style of infantry warfare, line and column (standing in the open and shooting) did not make sense after the invention of the machine gun. It seemed the Industrial Revolution had finally caught up with military technology. So the first tactical response to the maching gun was the same as the response to the first cannon, earthenwork fortifications or trenches.
