The settings menu for the PS3 has auto shut off settings for both the PS3 and controllers and both should be set to turnoff automatically.
You could corrupt the data or the HDD but you could be lucky and nothing happens but i suggest you play it safe just leave it to download/installing. You could turn it of all lose all data and corrupt the system or be lucky and nothing happen your chose but dont blame me if you lose everything it did tell you xD
