It's mainly a problem for fat older PS3s and ones kept in enclosed areas with restricted airflow. They use less power in the newer PS3 and that lets them run cooler
the PS2 slimline does overheat because there isn't a fan inside it, the larger PS2 does have a fan and will not overheat
