I see this problem every few months and clear it by going through this process.

At least given my "settings" I've found TB doesn't really delete inbox messages. I have emptied my "Inbox" and the size is still is 81854 KB . Netscape had the same "feature/problem". My fix is to make a temporary mail folder (Temp) and move all inbox mail into it that you want to remain in your inbox (if any).

Now in C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\6yb2t3zq.default\Mail\pop

If the "Inbox" size is still really big this may be the cause of your error message. The fix is to rename it to something else in the same directory say "xinbox". Also rename "inbox.msf" to "xinbox.msf". There should now be no inbox files.

Rerun TB. It will create a new inbox. Move (Drag and drop) the temp messages back into the new inbox.

Explore your mail folder in :

C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\6yb2t3zq.default\Mail\pop

The "Inbox" size should be MUCH smaller.

If the process fails or screws up TB just rename the "Xinbox" files back to "Inbox" and you'll be reset to the original config.

If the fix works you can delet the "Xinbox" files or edit them and see all the old mail TB never really deletes.

This may happen to other "mail" files in the same directory as well and the same procedure should be tried.

I never compact.

Hi Mike

This pop up message occurs for the first time:

Alert, This folder is being processed. Please wait until processing is complete to get messages.

Well, in server settings for this POP-3 account:

unchecked: Check for new messages every 10 minutes.

unchecked: Automatically download new messages.

and try it.
