You don't really find them toward the end of the game, but you look for them and find out what happened to them by locating the clues that the blue indicator on your HUD points to, after you get to a clue this annoying binging will start up, that means you're close, you listen for it, and just like a game of marco-polo, go to where it sounds the loudest, look around, the clue you have to find is highlighted in yellow and is usually a simple object: a helmet, a sniper rifle, then it will take you to a flashback/ miniquest, I think you can take it from there
