actually the orb has nothing to do with that, you dont even obtain it, it is stolen by team magma and returned after you beat the story line... the earthquake and the door to the magma hideout is triggered once you walk by it with the 'magma emblem' obtained from the old lady at mount pyre after team magma steals thhe red orb
