in a cavern- find them at least ~30 blocks down or lower...

gold uses itself up fast... make gold armor. gold spade will use it up almost as fast as wood. gold also brakes blocks FAST!- i still recommend making armor.

You first find gold which is quite deep into the ground, then mine it (I think you need a steel pick or above to do this), then smelt it in a furnace, then you have your ingots :)
