It is said that she was forced to marry Hades lord of the Underworld and her mother, angry that Zues did not object, went into a depression. During this the earth started to die and snow settled on the ground. In an attempt to save the earth Zues demanded Hades return Persephone, which he did after having her eat the seeds of a pomagranet so she would have to return. In spring the flowers bloom because Demeter is happy to have her child back and in fall they die away because Persephone returns to the underworld and leaves her mother depressed.
