You can get them from the haunted castle. Ask Artix in Amityville. Do the quest and you'll get an unlucky doom essence. Good luck, it takes a long time :(
here's how u cn finish the quest faster first go inside the castle then go to your right then keep goin straight until u find a moster wit a key (the last 1) u go bak were u started then go in straight then go to your right u will get to the servents room then after u kill the guy u get another key now use the key to go inside the last door defeat that guy n then u r done =^.^= note:must have d.a. suckas
There is also another quest that gives Unlucky Doom Essence, it is a quest from Zorbak out front of the inn of Amityville. It's called AmityVillian and it gives you the essence. The quest also may give you skull helmets that you can sell for around 300 coins each.

I don't think you can unless you have a Dragon Amulet... If you do have one, though, go to Chaney's shop in Crystal Clear Lake for the first upgrade (second? I forgot, sorry) and then collect 5 Unlucky Doom Essences from the Haunted Castle (via Artix) to upgrade it again. After that, keep merging Unlucky Doom Essences at Yulgar's Forge in Battleon for any other upgrades.
