The Dark Iron Dwarves are one of the Dwarven Clans (Ironforge, Bronzebeard, Wildhammer, Frostborn and Dark Iron). They have been ousted during a great war for their desire for conquest, and most live enslaved by the fire lord Ragnaros. They are unique among the Dwarven clans for their use of Arcane magic, predominantly of the Fire element.
The dwarves don't have a major enemy, like Humans against Orcs for example, however, the Ironforge Dwarves, which is the playable clan, have some kind of conflict against the Dark Iron Dwarves

The Thorium Brotherhood are a splinter faction of the Dark Iron Dwarven clan. During the war of three hammers, the three major Dwarf clans (Wildhammer, Ironforge and Bronzebeard) had a war with the Dark Irons, under the rule of Than Thaurissian. The Dark Iron Dwarves lost the war, and retreated to what is now Blackrock Mountain, where they were enslaved by Ragnaros. Some of them, escaping his grasp, turned on their evil ways and formed the Thorium Brotherhood. These mercenary Dwarves and master Blacksmiths now cater to adventurers, offering several quests in Searing Gorge and Blackrock Mountain. One of them (Lothos Darkbargainer) currently hides in the tavern in Blackrock Depths, offering crafting secrets of the Brotherhood to those who have earned enough reputation with them.

After the Battle at the Redhorn Gate, the dwarves returned to Erebor and the Iron Hills, and the Blue Mountains. However, when the folk of Erebor were driven out by Smaug, they wandered and settled down in Eriador, mining for iron and such. Thorin was the leader, but afterwards Erebor was reclaimed.
