Monkey has three masters. In Journey to the West(Xiyouji, 1592), Monkey takes the Daoist Immortal Subhodi as his first master because he teaches him his magical skills and method of immortality. He takes the Buddhist monk Xuanzang as his second and main master because he teaches him Buddhist restraint and because he is tasked by the Buddha to protect him. In the Supplement to the Journey to the West (Xiyoubu, 1641), Monkey takes the ghost of Yue Fei, a famous Song Dynasty (960-1279) general, as his third master because he teaches him Confucian ethic.

The Monkey King is a popular fictional character from the anonymously published novel Journey to the West (1592). According to the story, He is born from a boulder high atop the Mountain of Flowers and Fruits. He later studies under an immortal that teaches him the secrets of eternal life and all sorts of magic and Martial Arts. He becomes so powerful that he challenges the will of heaven. Finally, when no one can stand up to his might, the Buddha finally intervenes and imprisons him under a mountain. He is eventually released to protect a Buddhist monk from monsters along their journey to India to procure Buddhist sutras.

He has been extremely popular since the publication of the book. He has been featured in numerous sequels, plays, Cartoons, TV shows, and films. There is also a style of Chinese martial arts based on him.
