There was no god of wanton violence, but a couple Gods of war.

Odin was the God of War for ... greedy purposes. For the purpose of revenge, or wealth. To him, it was more important to win the war, then the means. The ends justify the means.
Tyr was the God of war for Justice, for Honor. For Tyr, the means dictated who won the war, regardless of the victor. To give up your honor for the purpose of victory meant you already lost.
