I am having the same problem. When I downloaded Kaspersky, I was no longer able to open the gift box or buy from the market to plant. Kaspersky shows Farmville as a gambling site and I think that is where the problem is. I have not as yet been able to fix the problem in my anti virus software.
Go to setting on the top of Kaspersky and turn off anti banner then farmville will work right again. I just fixed mine

Most gifts can be sold for Farm Coins. If you receive something you don't need from a neighbor, you can accept the gift anyway. It will be added to your Gift Box in the game. From there, you can sell the items. Many things won't yield many coins (extra collection items, for example, only sell for 5 coins), but if you need the coins, it is worth the few extra clicks to get it and sell it.
