Why did Dishonored rip off the Thief game series?

They didn't rip off Thief, although if there are similarities because they are both good games with robbery involved :P

Although gameplay is similar, some differences are Corvo is mute while Garrett won't shut up, Corvo is magic and Garrett has to get Focus from poppies...
