Why did poptropica change the release date of Cryptids Island from January 17 to January 18 2011?
No one is saying exactly why, but it was probably because they didn't want everybody to have to work on the US national holiday (MLK Day was January 17, 2011).
Normally the games had been coming out on a Thursday (since Nabooti Island in 2008). However, with Christmas on a Saturday, the game was scheduled for the Tuesday before (December 21), then rescheduled for Monday (December 20). Since the normal Early Access is exactly 4 weeks, the release date would have been Monday, January 17, 2011. This was altered for some reason to Tuesday January 18, 2011 after the Monday date had already been promulgated.
