This doesn't happen to me. Did you try looking in your properties and seeing what was running? Maybe that's what's causing it.

You go to a website called technic.net and you then download the technic launcher. After that you can open the launcher, select tekkit, login and play.

Updating minecraft on the computer is very easy. When you open the launcher and log in, it should download the new version automatically (if you confirm it). Obviously, this requires an internet connection. The only difference is updating to 1.6.1. This version requires you to visit the minecraft website, go to the downloads section, and download the new launcher. Then, when you want to play minecraft, you open the new launcher, login, download the update automatically, and play.
Just sign in using the Minecraft launcher (The little icon on your desktop or wherever). It updates automatically. If it doesn't, when you open the Minecraft launcher, click options, Force update and sign in. To see if it worked, look at the bottom left corner of Minecraft to see if it the version your looking for.
You insert an empty disc into your PC or CPU and open your downloads folder (or wherever you put the minecraft launcher) and click and drag the minecraft launcher to the empty disc drive located usually on the side of the libraries organizer under "computer".
