The 3DS screen has a different proportion to the screens on the older consoles, it is a widescreen, HD one. If it tried to play older DS games in the same proportions, the images would be stretched horizontally rather than uniformly magnifying the image and cutting the top and bottom off. So it plays them on a narrower screen.
