They do not work because the games are software developed for the PS2 and they do not have the hardware and software that was in the first PS3 models released. Many PS2 titles could not even play in the USA 60 GB PS3 model and less in the EUR release using a partially software based emulation. Sony decided not to make a PS3 backward compatible before the PS3 slim was released . All 40 GB models do not play PS2 games and the Fat 80 GB models with 2 USB ports do not play PS2 games. One of the main reasons that Sony stopped Backward compatibility besides cost was problems making the PS2 games software work in the PS3. They could not make game developers modify the games to work on the PS3 because the agreement for the license was for the PS2. The answer below is incorrect according to Sony you can not make a PS3 that does not play PS2 games play them with any software or hardware updates. They say there is nothing you can do to make a PS3 that does not play PS2 games able to play them

They Don't Work Because The Graphics Produced On A Ps2 Game Are too low Standards For The ps3 Console Resulting in It not Working But you Can get Ps3's Modified to play the ps2 games although prices for that range from £300 - £700. Its Not worth wasting money when you could easily get a ps2 console off ebay for £20 - £35. Thank u ID for the help
