The game is scary for many reasons.

1. The backstory to this game is dreary, which adds extra creepiness to the game.

2. The animatronics. Just look at them.

3. The stress the game puts you in.

According to the instructions given to you over the phone, the animatronics have the following behaviours:

1 - They are allowed to roam at night, to prevent their servos from locking up.

2 - If they see a bare robotic endoskeleton, they will put it into an animatronic suit.

3 - At night, they 'probably won't recognise <the player> as a person'.

So the animatronics can move around, and when they see the night guard, they will mistake him for an endoskeleton. They will then force him into an animatronic suit - which is fatal due to the crossbars and other support structures inside the head.
