Why is poptropica taking so long?

Because there may be a lot of people in there at that moment. The game loads slowly using dial-up, but stores the current island on your computer - be sure you have enough free RAM and disk space so that this happens smoothly.

It is slow in part because of the fact that too many people are using the servers at the same time. Priority usage of the servers is given to members, so members play a version of Poptropica that loads faster.

Many of the scenes on the newer islands have too much graphic illustration for slower computers, and even on fast ones, the scene or characters may take a few seconds to properly display. The overloading is also visible in the opening scene of Zomberry Island when the searchlights shine on the tunnel.
