many things can cause your sims to become unhappy.
the main reason is negative moodlets that cause their mood to plummet rapidly if not kept in check. these usually have a time limit and go away after a while, or after you improve the status of where your sim is situated (like if they have the moodlet that the house is dirty and you clean it the moodlet will go away)
another reason could be a glitch that's been going around and even though your sims have few or no negative moodlets their mood is "miserable" if this is the case then simply save your game and exit to main menu, and then reload your household.
