Why will Fable not start for your regular Xbox?

Assuming that you are using Fable 1 or Fable TLC in the regular Xbox (Fable 2 will only work in the 360), it could have to do with the condition of the disc or of the reader eye. Try checking the disc to assure that it is not scratched. Use a drop of plain dishsoap and your fingertips to wash the disc in cool water in the sink. Dry it by blotting with your tshirt or other soft material that won't cause scratches. That will remove any fingerprints or gunk that could prevent it from being read. If that isn't working, run a DVD player cleaner through your system. They are just a couple of dollars up at Target, Wal-Mart, etc. Just a tiny bit of dust on the eye can really mess things up.
