The amount of gas a fireplace uses is usually dependent on the user's adjustments of the fireplace. Beware that some synthetic fireplaces do not accept real, regular wood to burn on. Please consult your manual before doing such a switch.

If you burn seasoned wood in your fireplace, you'll use the gas (if you want) to help get it started, then cut off the gas once the fire is burning nicely. How much heat it will throw depends on the fireplace, the chimney and whether you have a liner or blower. Synthetic logs are for looks. The gas jet remains open and creates the flame to make it look like the logs are burning. The usage would be similar to keeping a burner on high on a gas range. There little/no heat as a result and in fact, more heat in the room goes up the chimney than is produced. If you decide to burn seasoned wood, make sure your flue is open and that your chimney is constructed to accommodate such a fire.
