Escher created pictures where you don't know where you are as a spectator. He used in a way the same ideas as cubism, mixing the perspectives, the directions from which you look. In another way Escher is continuing the ideas of Piranesi who circa 18oo - Italy, Rome -made also architectural constructions of inns or big inside buildings in which the stairs had different directions and floors, so you could go in different perspectives. It is playing around with space!

Escher was very much educated in mathematics and used this background for his art. He had a lot of connections with mathematicians in his time.
