"Visual" is an adjective meaning something you can see. Here it is being used as a noun meaning a picture or illustration.
The word "illusttation" has the same latin root as the word "illuminate," which means to shed light upon. An illustration supports, reinforces and depicts the essence of a text, such as a magazine article. Conventional illustration employed techniques as processes such as drawing, painting and engraving. Photography also serves as illustration in current use. Illustration as a practice usuall falls into two categories: Commerial (sells a specific consumer product) and Editorial (sells a concept or ideology).
Some alternative options for displaying a photo without using a glass photo frame include using a magnetic photo rope, a photo clip string, a photo display board, a photo canvas, or a photo stand.
The main difference is the means by which each is accomplished. A traditional illustration is a sketch, painting, drawing, etc. A photo illustration is just that - a photo.
