It is called the VALLEY OF THE SQUINTING WINDOWS because in 1918 Brinsley MacNamara (John Weldon) published a novel entitled the same. As Brinsley was, at the time, living in Delvin, he allegedly based the novel on the village of Delvin, known as Garradrimna, in the novel. The novel deals with village life in Ireland in the early twentieth century. It portrays the characters of Garradrimna as gossiping, nosey, bitter and in general not very nice people.
The people of Delvin were at first delighted to have produced an accomplished writer, the father of whom was the local Headmaster at Ballinvalley School. However the euphoric celebrations were short lived as it was soon realised that the fictional characters resembled a number of real people living in and around Delvin. Had it not been for this realisation, the book would most probably have passed into obscurity.
Instead the people of Delvin, those that were for the most part directly involved, gathered a number of copies of the novel and held a public burning in the centre of the village, hence becoming the most famous burned book in Ireland. It did sadly not end there.
The locals then turned on the father of Brinsley, James Weldon, boycotting the local school and indeed attacking him in through mob style. This of course made national and international headlines which of course connected Delvin to, 'The Valley of the Squinting Windows.'
The very mention of the book in Delvin today can still cause a frown to appear on the heads of certain families. Nevertheless in 2009, two Delvin locals decided it was time to put the ghost of Brinsley forever to rest. They organised the largest book fair in Ireland called, 'The Delvin Garradrimna Book Fair'. It was at this fair that public readings were held, the readers included, Mary McEvoy, Mánchan Magan, Eamonn Lawlor and Bernie Comaskey. The Delvin Garradrimna Book Fair is still running, the latest fair was held on Sunday the 5th of May.
The organisers are working towards 2018, the 100th anniversary of the publication of the novel, where it is hoped that they will re-enact the scandal.
Gainsborough didn't produce a work with that exact title, though he did do a sketch called 'Dancers with Musicians in a Woodland Glade'. This is available to buy as a print- the original is in a private collection.
