Diverting the overflow of water to another place is one way to dry out the garden. Many people in Houston, where I used to live, would permanently place a drainage pipe (PVC) from the low place in the yard to the road--it needs to have a slight pitch so that gravity will lead it to where you want it. Otherwise, use gutters so that the water is diverted to a better area for drainage. Building up the area would probably just lead the water to pool elsewhere.

What does a drain field look like and how does it function in a septic system?

A drain field is a series of underground pipes or trenches filled with gravel that help distribute treated wastewater from a septic tank into the soil. The drain field looks like a flat area of grass or soil with small mounds or depressions where the pipes are located. The wastewater flows out of the septic tank into the drain field, where it is filtered and absorbed by the soil, allowing for natural treatment and disposal.

You don't, you replace it. Dig up the old, lay new pipe and gravel and cover. You can also try the natural bacterial cleaners, such as the all-natural advanced formula Septic-Helper 2000.
