Depending on the filter valving type, reverse the flow through the filter either with a multiport valve, push pull valve or rotary valve (located as a lever at the bottom of the tank) Always shut off pump whyen switching the valve(s). Backwash until discharge runs clear. Resume normal filtering direction for 2-3 minutes and repeat 3 times to remove as much old DE as possible (By the way, It's DIATOMACEOUS Earth, NOT Diatanancious)Replace DE at a rate of 3/4 lb (about 3/4 of a one-pound cofee can) per each 10 square feet of filter area. Filter area will be the size of the filter grids and also the model no. of the filter (i.e: FNS 48 = 48 sq ft., Hayward DE36 = 36 sq ft.) Replacement DE should be added as a slurry (mixed with water) into the running skimmer slowly so as not to clog the pipes. Too much DE will cause premature filter loading and excessive pressure at the filter.
