Somehow the pump has lost prime. (The water has drained out of the pump somehow). Turn off the pump, remove the pump lid, add water to the top of the pump pot, replace the lid and start the pump. It may help if you had a valve before the pump to close while filling the pump pot then open it as you turn the pump back on. It may take up to two to 3 minutes to prime or suck water. It may also help to bleed off the resulting air from the filter thru the air relief valve on top of the filter if it has one. Sand filters do not have them. You may have a small leak in the system allowing water to return to the pool during pump shut down. If you can frequently bleed air off the top of the filter while the system is running then you may indeed have a leak. Or you may have to reset the tripper at the breaker box.
