I had a leak in the bottom of our gunite mosiac tile covered pool and was able to find it by lowering the water level to about 1 foot then dropping red dye slowly around the perimeter of the pool. The dye headed straight to the leak. We fixed the leak and have not had a problem since. To find a leak in a vinyl you can use the red dye,although the easiest thing to do is call your pool dealer and have them come and with a leak detector.Then use a clear patch or scrap piece of your liner(always cut in the shape of circle).

Why is my pool cloudy?
Any particles in your pool can cause cloudiness - for example, dead algae. Backwash valve is leaking by. More than likely it is a bad oring inside the valve. Or it was not place back into recirc mode completely. or you may have a leak on the return side of the filter. That includes all the plumbing from the filter or heater to the pool. The back wash valve may be obvious if the waste line ends close by. The back wash valve should be placed in the "filter" mode not the "recirculation" mode. K

Starting at the pool first is the static skimmer then the leaf basket then the hair filter basket on the inflow side of the pump then the pipe from the pump to the filter then the pipe from the filter to the pool return The chlorinator sits on the pool return pie at the highest place in the system.

Alum is a floculent and these are often used to settle excessive amounts of dirt to the bottom of pools the are available from pool shops. It sounds like you will need to replace the laterals in your sand filter first so that you don't have this problem in the future. Take care vacuum the settled dirt and flock to waste do not put it through the filter.
