Water too old, that's a new one,

Here in the great white north, our swimming pool time is limited to about three months in the summer. We start prepping pools when the last freeze has passed. Typically what greets the average pool owner here after pulling back the winter cover looks more like a bog than a crystal clear chlorine oasis. Suspended or dissolved solids as discussed in the Discussion area exposition will only become worse by reducing the water level, and generally return to pre-drain levels with refilling.

Your solution is a good filter. Large solids can be skimmed out. Dissolved solids require more than the average pool filter. Consider a centrifugal prefilter, replacing your sand/medium filter, and installing a cartridge post-filter.

Can air get into pool filter causing it to lose prime if water level in pool is too high?

Yes, air can get into the pool pump causing it to lose prime if you have a leak or crack in the plumbing leading from the pool to the pump. The pool level being too high plays no role, however you should make sure that the pool level is not too high for other reasons, mainly the level is too high, water will leak under your cement causing it to settle. Keep the water level in the middle of the skimmer opening.

Does chlorine smell from the pool mean that more chlorine is needed?

Not necessarily. The smell of chlorine from a pool usually means there is too little chlorine in the water, rather than too much. This smell is often caused by the formation of chloramines, which are compounds produced when chlorine reacts with contaminants in the water. Regularly testing and maintaining the proper chlorine levels in the pool can help prevent this issue.

What happens if there is too much calcium in your pool water?

If there is too much calcium in your pool water, it can lead to scaling on pool surfaces and equipment. This can affect water flow in pipes, reduce the effectiveness of sanitizer, and create cloudy water. It is recommended to maintain calcium hardness levels within the recommended range to prevent these issues.

Our pool needed some water today so we added some. But we added too much and the water level was above the skimmer. The filter started releasing water out of the backflow valve. What do we do?

I don't know why your skimmer is doing what its doing, However you can lwer the water level in your pool by vacuuming to waste OS backwashing.

Why you have to test calcium in a swimming pool?

If it's too high, your water might get cloudy, or you might get scale at the pool's water line or inside the pool heater. If it's too low, it can cause the surface of a concrete pool to erode. If it's too low in a vinyl or fiberglass pool, it will have no effect, so don't worry about it. Pool dealers will still sell you calcium to add to vinyl pools, because they like selling stuff, and have been told by the chemical companies that you need to have it. They don't know why, though.
