This is called free diving and there are different classes. Jumping in with only your swimming suit and swimming down as far as you can and back to the surface is the most difficult and the record is about 100M. There are various others like wearing fins, going down a line with a weight, coming back up with a float. The one with the deepest records uses a weight to drag you down. The record for this is 275M (Goran Colac 2011). As this is a competitive sport this record will probably also be broken in time.
There may have been deeper dives but they may not have been accredited and probably a lot of much deeper ones where the diver didn't return to the surface...
He can't.
3 minutes
about half an hour i think :P
A person can survive without breathing for about 3-5 minutes before experiencing serious brain damage or death.
The Bajau people, known as sea nomads, can stay underwater for up to 13 minutes without any breathing equipment due to their unique genetic adaptations.
70% of the time a land turtle can drown it has lungs and is not capable of breathing underwater for a long time.
Without special equipment they do not.
Without breathing, the world record is 22min With air bottles (scuba diver) or in a submarine you can of course stay longer. In a submarine when you have enough supplies, you can stay virtually forever under water.
People scuba dive because it enables them to stay underwater much longer than they would be able to do so without breathing apparatus. SCUBA stands for self contained underwater breathing apparatus. It is different from surface feed or Hooka diving where air is pumped down because it gives you more freedom. People have been able to hold their breath for up to 8 minutes but when you move about you can only hold your breath a short time. Taking an air supply means you can spend a long time underwater without being restricted by an air pipe from the surface.
After three minutes of not breathing, the brain is essentially devoid of use. After 5 minutes of not breathing, the body shuts down.
Up to (but no longer than) 10 secs
we shall never know until someone answers the question? Another answer SCUBA is the acronym for 'Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus'.FREE DIVING: The deepest anyone has gone (and returned!) without special underwater breathing apparatus is 214 meters (2007). However, the whole business is fraught with danger and controversy. The main limiting factor is the how long a person can hold their breath whilst swimming. In this particular case the diver, Herbert Nitsch, went down on a weighted sled and was pulled to the surface by a lift bag he inflated. Obviously a human without special breathing apparatus can go much deeper than 214 meters, but the likelihood of them returning alive becomes more and more remote the deeper they go. * For more information see Related links below this box
