Windsurfing is generally a very safe sport. It is practiced by millions and there are very few deaths associated with it. However, there are dangers depending on the conditions in which you participate. These include hypothermia, drowning, concussion and broken bones. These dangers mostly occur when windsurfing in extreme conditions that include high wind, big surf and shallow reefs. For those who windsurf on mildly windy days on lakes and other protected bodies of water, these risks are quite minimal. Dangers can be minimized further by getting good instruction, staying close to shore, and getting out of the water when the the wind, weather or surf conditions are beyond your abilities.
