Once tile surface has been damaged from blasting with glass beads or etched with chemicals there is no way to reverse the damage. You will have to remove and replace the tiles.
No the pool doesn't "have" to be drained. Are you replacing all the tile or just making a repair? Small repairs can easily be done by lowering the waterline to just below the tile. There are also new methods of cleaning tile to restore it to near it's original look. If you are changing the tile your tile setter will probably drain the water.
To replace the decorative tile border on a concrete pool, the pool will have to be drained. The old tile needs to be taken off and a new tile with waterproof grout or concrete can be installed. The pool should dry for a week or so, before it is refilled.
The best way I can answer this question is to tell you to contact a tile specialist, he will have a book of tile that you can look through and decide on what type you want. It is common for pool owners to replace old tiles with a slightly different type of pool tile because the original is not available, you may have to do that. It would be better to remove the old tile, then put your new tile in it's place. If you tile over the old there is a chance it could come off and your new tile with it. I know of an adhesive swimming pool tile border made of 4mil liner, its a peel and stick called borderlines adhesive tile manufactured by Jedco Products. All the internet websites carry it and it looks great, it would stick right over the old tile, this could get you by until your ready to remove the old tile.
Generally when tile is installed, homeowners keep the left over tile in the garage or attic. If you are not able to locate the left over tile, you can go to your local hardware store like Home Depot and find a closley matching tile.
Yes. This is done quite frequently in cleaning calcium deposits from pool tile.
The traditional method uses sand or glass beads. Some cleaning companies use a media that is softer than the tile to avoid damage to the surface. Specially processed sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and hydrated magnesium sulphate (epson salts) are used quite frequently for cleaning pool tile without damaging the tile. Both of these products are not recyclable and are cleaned by dissolving in water. Care must be taken with sodium bicarbonate because it can damage landscaping if not used properly. Surface Renewal Pool Tile Cleaning uses both glass bead and magnesium sulfate to clean pool tile. You can not bead blast glass pool tile without etching so the use magnesium sulfate to clean glass pool tile is a must. On standard ceramic pool tile glass bead blasting is sufficient due to the high cost of using magnesium sulfate as long as it is done at a low pressure.
tile Definitely tile!
The experts at Arizona Bead Blasting, the Valleys' #1 choice for pool tile cleaning, are now offering the newest media for pool tile cleaning: pool mineral blasting. Kieserite pool formula (Epson Salt) is specially formulated for cleaning swimming pool tiles. It's a gentle alternative to glass beads. It safely removes calcium, mineral deposits, oily residue, mold, algae and scale from pool waterline surfaces. Some pool tile surfaces cannot be cleaned with glass bead due to either their delicate nature or home owner neglect. Glass tile, black tile, decorative tile and heavily calcified pool tiles can now be cleaned with spectacular results. Kieserite costs more per linear foot than glass bead but the results are definitely worth it. Our process for cleaning is exactly the same. The only difference is the media. Kieserite -Naturally mined mineral salt: * pH neutral (7.0) * 100% Non-Hazardous * Water soluble (Dissolves in 24 hrs) * Safe on ALL tile surfaces: ** Glass Tile ** Decorative Tile ** Black Tile ** Neglected Tile * Does not require us to empty pool * NO mechanical abrasive devices (pumice, grinders or wire wheels) * NO harsh acids or chemicals * NO change to pool chemistry www.arizonabeadblasting.com 602-692-4913
