This is normal with my DE filter. When I first turn the pump on the pressure starts at about 5 psi. During the next 30-60 minutes, it rises to 15 psi and then stablizes there. So, I use 15 psi as my "starting" pressure and don't backwash until it reaches 20 psi. When was the last time you had the filter broken down and cleaned????

If you have a sand or DE filter the setting is filter in the case of cartridge filters it is filter as always unless there are other settings for your particular setup.

Another tip would be to put your hand by the outlet where the water goes back into the pool if the water pushes your hand away you have good pressure also take a pressure reading at the filter, if you put your hand at the outlet and the water does not push your hand away take a pressure reading, backwash the filter, put your hand at the outlet again if it pushes it away go back to the filter look at the gauge and see what it reads now, and that would be your suggested low pressure for your filter.

How does a DE filter work on a pool?
Simply put, Diatomaceous Earth (DE) are the bones of tiny little animals that lived millions and millions of years ago, diatoms. This DE is used to coat the "grids" inside the DE filter which captures and filters particles as small as 5 microns. When the filter pressure rises, the swimming pool DE filter is backwashed in the same manner as a sand filter. A slurry of DE is put into the skimmer to "recharge" or "re-coat" the grids of these swimming pool DE filters. This type of filter is effective and efficient but a little more expensive to maintain.
