The short answer: because women stopped wanting them. There were a couple of reasons for that. First, Victoria's Secret was taking over more and more of the lingerie business and did an exceptional job of putting out the idea that their underwear was more fashionable and better made. That said, Victoria's Secret sold satin string bikinis as well, for most of the 90's. Vicky's then became the trendsetter: if they made it, women wanted it, so when they stopped making them, the demand for the style dropped. They (satin bikinis) continued to fill a niche market among high school and college aged girls, until Vicky's also conquered that mountain with their "VS Pink" collection. Another reason I hear a lot is that they show panty lines. This explains their popularity among men: you can clearly see the woman's panties through her clothes and fantasize about them. Many women don't like that. Then, there was the rise on the thong, which dealt with the panty line problem and are considered even more desirable by many men. From the 1980's to the 2000's, the thong went from stripper wear to a lingerie basic that people even buy for young teens. I have heard a few other reasons such as polyester doesn't breathe and is bad for hot weather, and that they require special care by either hand washing or washing alone.
