Sold by Montgomery Wards in the late 1930's. Made by Mossberg under contract for Wards. Similar to Mossberg model 25 or 25a. Value shoud be $50 to $150 depending on condition. A Few More Details: The Westernfield (aka Wards Western Field) Model 36 (.22 S, L & LR) is an early 1930s (between about 1930-35) Montgomery Wards housebrand rename of the Mossberg 10 or Stevens 52B. Wards sold both of these rebranded as the Western Field Model 36. The original price was about $4.50 (not in today's dollars, of course). It can fire .22 Short, Long and Long Rifle rounds. .22LR are the easiest to find today, but the others are still available. The difference is the length and power of the round. Optional slings and scopes were available from Wards, Mossberg, and Savage for this rifle, although adding them requires installing swivels into the wood (slings) and tapping the receiver and barrel (scope). This was a basic .22 at the time and has no particular collector value. People often inherit them, so they may have significant sentimental value. However, Mossberg and Stevens made good rifles, and examples of this one in good condition are often described as "tackdrivers" (ie, very accurate) by owners. Many parts are available for all three versions of this rifle, although it is helpful to determine whether your Model 36 is actually a Mossberg or a Stevens to increase the pool of parts you can draw on. The most common missing part (and, apparently, the hardest to find) seems to be the adjustable rear open sight. Be aware that some standard rifle cross-references will list the Stevens or Savage (same company) 521 instead of the 52B as the original maker rifle, but the 521 is actually a shotgun and this is an error.
