My advice, get a different roommate. While the one roommate having a felony conviction doesn't strip the other of their right to own a firearm, there is a federal law which prohibits from purchasing, possessing, or being allowed access to firearms and ammunition. Even if kept in a safe, law enforcement has a pretty broad discretion to determine the felon to have access to a firearm simply by it being in the same house, and both roommates could very easily find themselves facing charges.
