The "Enders Royal" name is associated with Shapleigh Hardware of St Louis, and Crescent was one of the several manufacturers. "Cannon Breech-Simmons Hardware Co" is found on single shot guns made by J. Stevens Arms Co. But I cannot locate any information that indicates a shotgun was made with both of these trade names.
Serial no. C8172

Not just the US, but all military forces- for the first time, you could fire and reload quickly- while not standing up! Breech loading firearms meant a rifleman could fire from cover, and not while standing exposed to enemy fire.
Breech loading firearms can be reloaded much more quickly, they can be reloaded when moving, and they are easy to reload when lying down. The muzzleloader must be loaded when standing upright.
About the time of the American Civil War- in the 1860s. The Spencer was a cartridge firing, breech loading, rifled repeater. The Burnside used a metal cartridge and a tape primer. The Sharps (as in Sharpshooter) used a paper cartridge, but was a breech loader. One breech loader saw limited use by a few British soldiers during the American revolution- the Howe. It was a flintlock, but loaded from the breech.
"NITRO HUNTER" was one of the many brand names used by the HD Folsom Company. They were major distributors of shotguns to the various hardware/catalog stores in the 19th and early 20th century. HD Folsom absorbed Crescent Firearms Company and Crescent became the in-house manufacturer for this type of gun, but HD Folsom also sold products made by Hopkins & Allen, H&R, Iver Johnson, etc. Your particular shotgun was made by Crescent and distributed by HD Folsom to Belknap Hardware in Louisville KY sometime between 1902 and 1930. sales@countrygunsmith.net

Paul Jeserich was a German gunsmith who contributed to the development of firearms by designing a breech-loading rifle in 1841. This design allowed for faster reloading compared to muzzle-loading firearms, leading to advancements in firearm technology. Jeserich's design laid the foundation for future breech-loading firearms.
In the early part of the nineteenth century, Yes this is the Cotton Gin inventor. Whitney firearms lasted a long time- they used standardized parts, and survived into the Breech-loading era. there were Whitney single-shot rifles made well after the Civil War and surely used on the Frontier. They were something like the Remington rolling block with the (split breech) action, and two overlapping hammers.
